Long considered a better alternative to a CD, annuities have become very popular today. Annuities usually pay higher rates than CD's and defer taxes.  Many people on a fixed income find annuities are a better option than letting their money sit in CD's or a money market account.  Like a CD, you can place lump sums of money in annuities and leave the money for a period of years, usually between 1 and 10 years. The longer you leave the money in, the more your interest rate should be. Depending on the annuity purchased, a yearly amount is allowed to be withdrawn without a penalty, usually 10%.
